The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is an international charity that promotes and supports music in all styles of Christian worship.
The RSCM launched Music Sunday 2010, bringing together a celebration of music with fundraising to support the work of the charity and that of participating churches.
Music Sunday on 13 June was an opportunity to give thanks for the dedication and work of church musicians, whether choristers, instrumentalists, cantors, organists, or choir directors.
"Church musicians play an important part in church worship, and along with clergy they are often
the 'first-in and last-out' on a Sunday, with a lot more preparation
going on behind the scenes at other times," said Lindsay Gray, the
Director of the RSCM when introducing last year's event.
"Music Sunday is an excellent opportunity to give thanks for the 'craftsman's
art and music's measure.' "
The quote above is from the hymn 'Angel Voices' by Monk, with words by Francis Pott, written in 1866.
Yea, we know that thou rejoicest
o'er each work of thine;
thou didst ears and hands and voices
for thy praise design;
craftsman's art and music's measure
for thy pleasure
all combine.
