January was a quiet month on the news front but a lot of work has been going on behind the scenes.
The work on revising our pattern of services was finalised and, although you won't see much of a difference on the Regular Services page, some of the services have been re-styled as was explained in the Rector's January Tidings letter.
This is an exciting new venture. It will be launched in February 2012 after many months of preparation. Premises to hold the club were generously made available by Andrew Wheatley of the Wivenhoe Business Centre. At the time of writing this some work still needs to be done but hopefully there will be some pictures of the club on next month's news page.
We've had to wait a long time for them but these have now been installed at the back of the church and they are a great improvement: room for all the books and bits and very good looking, too.
A new table has replaced the less than impressive one that stood against the back of the rear pew. It was fashioned from two redundant pews by Daniel Marsden, who gave his time and expertise for free. We are very grateful to Daniel for this beautiful addition to the furniture, it is a fine piece of work.
Under the stewardship of our treasurer Lynne Horner we have ended 2011 in a relatively sound financial position and the good news is that St Mary's has paid its Parish Share for 2011 in full! (you may recall that in 2010 we only managed 90%).
We have been blessed by generosity from many quarters and the hard work of several fund raising committees. A special mention also ought to be made of the work of our musical director and organist Graham Wadley. Graham invests an enormous amount of time and effort into St Mary's music scene and, as the treasurer has pointed out, it would cost St Mary's at least £1,500 a year to just have an organist for the Sunday morning service, never mind all the other musical events.
And now for a slightly less upbeat matter. By popular request a repeat batch of the September Church Ale was brewed for the December market. Unfortunately, and as can happen with live beers, a rogue yeast must have crept in because we have found that not all the bottles were good. If you have experienced a bad bottle and have more left, please get in touch with Marika Footring.
